Join the next Texas Coalition to Reduce Gun Violence meeting

Over 3,350 gun-related deaths occur in Texas each year. Texas Gun Sense is calling on state leaders to make targeted, common sense policy changes that can save lives. Read more here and learn about some of our priorities:

• Prevent prohibited buyers from obtaining guns, and improve the background check system;
  
• Reduce suicides by providing information on risk, prevention, and safe storage of firearms;
• Ensure the public and policymakers have a thorough understanding of the effects Texas policies have on gun violence;
• Advocate for the creation of a statewide ad campaign to encourage safe gun storage.

What's Happening at the Texas Legislature?

Read Governor Abbott's School and Firearm Safety Action Plan Issued May 30, 2018

Read Speaker Straus's Interim Charges for School Safety Issued June 1, 2018.  

The Senate Select Committee on Violence in Schools & School Security was established June 1, 2018 and held four public hearings each on a different topic: June 11 (video), June 12 (video), July 18 (video) and July 24 (video).  Read their report to the Governor.

The Texas House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee heard public testimony regarding the Interim Charges for School Safety on June 25th, 2018.  (video).

The Texas House Homeland Security & Public Safety Committee and House Veterans Affairs held a joint committee hearing on June 28, 2018 to discuss School Marshall programs.  (video)
